This devotional draws inspiration from Matthew 27:15-25, reflecting on the poignant moment when the crowd chose Barabbas over Christ, evoking a profound sadness not of judgment, but of recognition of our own propensity for similar choices in our lives. As Easter approaches, a time intended to commemorate the profound sacrifice and resurrection of our Savior, it prompts us to reflect on parallels between the people of Israel then and ourselves today.
During the Passover week, a time of celebration and atonement, crowds gathered to offer their lambs at the Temple, tracing back to their deliverance from Egypt. Yet amidst this sacred observance, the true significance seemed lost. Some understood the rituals theoretically, while others followed out of habit. However, collectively, they missed the presence of their ultimate atonement, the promised Messiah, standing among them. Instead of recognizing Jesus as the fulfillment of prophecy, they were swayed by the manipulation of religious leaders, choosing Barabbas, a criminal, over the blameless Christ.
Before condemning them, we must examine our own lives. Are we also guilty of prioritizing destructive paths over the love and mercy of our Savior? Daily, we face choices—be it distractions like social media, toxic influences, or compromised beliefs within our churches. These distractions hinder our ability to discern God’s voice, echoing the failings of those who chose Barabbas.
We cannot postpone this crucial decision any longer. How long will we straddle both sides? How long will we excuse our sins, hindering God’s transformative work within us? Each day of indecision is a choice for “Barabbas”, perpetuating the eternal struggle between good and evil.
It’s time to echo the resolve of Joshua and Elijah (Joshua 24:14&15, 1 Kings 18:21), choosing unequivocally whom we will serve. Let us heed Christ’s commission to take up our cross daily and follow Him, willing to sacrifice worldly desires for His sake. May we repent and commit ourselves wholeheartedly to the path of Christ.
Let our prayer be one of humility and submission, seeking forgiveness and strength to choose God above all else. May we grasp the eternal truth that nothing in this world compares to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ. As we await His glorious return, may we be found steadfast in His Kingdom.
Prayer
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Grant us the grace to choose You above all else, to surrender our desires to Your will. Strengthen us to walk in Your ways, forsaking the allure of this world. May our lives be a testimony to Your redeeming love. In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen.
